Spirit is pleased to announce the full instructional staff for the 2010 season. The 2010 season marks a renewed sense of energy and purpose for Spirit as a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to deliver superior performances to audiences and high-quality programming and instruction to performing members. The corps’ move back to Atlanta, a new image design, changes in operational logistics, the invitation to present at the 2010 Georgia Music Educators Association Conference, and the dedication to increasing the quality and impact of programming and instruction are all part of the corps’ obligation to insure the longevity of the organization. Director of Education and Programming Mark Waymire states, “This staff represents years of experience in performing and teaching at the top level of the drum corps activity. Our instructors have finalist and championship level experience in all indoor and outdoor pageantry arenas. We believe our staff represents a diversity of successful drum corps experience as well as a variety of professional performance, teaching, and design knowledge and skills.” Spirit is extremely excited to welcome these talented artists and teachers to our instructional staff. 2010 Spirit Staff Administrative Staff Joel Vincent, Executive Director Brass Staff Scott Boerma, Brass Arranger Visual Staff Jeremy Hunt, Visual Coordinator and Drill Design Guard Staff Jude Boughton, Caption Head Percussion Staff Shane Gwaltney, Caption Coordinator and Battery Arranger Staff Bios: Brass Staff Scott Boerma – Brass Arranger - Scott’s arranging and composing credits read like a who’s who of the marching and concert world. As current Associate Director of Bands, Director of the Michigan Marching Band, Donald R. Shepherd Associate Professor of Conducting, and activities as a clinician and composer, he remains active in almost all avenues of music creation, producing, and performance. We are pleased to welcome Scott back for his third season as the Spirit arranger. Andy Putnam – Co-Caption Head and Low Brass - is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Education at The University of Michigan, where he directs the Michigan Women’s Basketball Band and is part of the graduate wind-conducting studio. He holds Bachelor of Music in Education from The University of Wisconsin, and is the former Director of Bands at Whitnall High School near Milwaukee, WI. During his tenure at Whitnall he won three State Marching Band Championships in five years and earned nothing less than bronze in subsequent placements. In his ninth season of world-class drum corps teaching, Andy has also worked as music arranger for many high schools, universities and drum corps including the Madison Scouts, University of Michigan, University of South Carolina, The Glassmen, and Capital Sound. Before joining the Spirit staff, Andy served on the instructional staff at the Madison Scouts and Glassmen. Todd Snead – Co- Caption Head, Director of Corps Development, and Low Brass - is Assistant Professor of Music Education at The University of Minnesota and is currently completing his Ph.D. in Music Education at Georgia State University. Todd holds a Bachelor and Master of Music in Education degrees from Texas Tech University and Arizona State University, is a former performing member of the Broadway musical Blast, and is the former Assistant Director of Bands at Judson High School in San Antonio, TX. He has provided professional development for teachers and in community engagement with the Phoenix Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Charleston Symphony, and is published in Music Educators Journal and Teaching Music. Prior to his tenure at Spirit Todd served as a brass instructor at the Madison Scouts and Glassmen. Steve McKeithen, High Brass Instructor - is the Assistant Director of Bands and Athletic Band Director at the University of South Carolina where he leads the “Mighty Sound of the Southeast”. He is currently completing his D.M.A. in Conducting from Arizona State University where he taught in all areas of the band program. Steve holds Bachelor and Master Degrees of Music in Education from The University of Florida and The University of Illinois. While at Florida, Steve was awarded the coveted Performers Certificate, performed with the Faculty Woodwind Quintet, and premiered a piece for clarinet alone at the Society of Composers Conference in 1993. Steve is the former Director of Bands at Seguin High School in Seguin, Texas and Instrumental Music Coordinator for the Seguin Independent School District. While at Seguin, his band won the 2003 National Adjudicators Invitational Wind Ensemble Festival. He was marching member of Suncoast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps. Prior to joining Spirit’s staff last in 2009 Steve taught at the Madison Scouts and Glassmen. Jacob Garlinger, High Brass Instructor - is the Associate Director of Bands at Richardson High School in Richardson, TX. Prior to his assignment at Richardson High School, Jacob was the Director of Bands at Westwood Junior High where the Symphonic I Band was named a Texas Honor Band finalist and Grand Champion at several festivals. Mr. Garlinger has also worked with Richardson Junior High and as an Associate Director at Berkner High School. During his time at Berkner, the marching band received numerous accolades and was a Bands of America and Texas State Marching Contest finalist. Under his direction, numerous students have become members of the Texas All-State Band, music majors, private teachers, fellow band directors, and professional performing musicians. Jacob is a former marching member and soloist with the Madison Scouts where he was also the 1998 DCI Mellophone Solo Champion. In addition to Spirit, he has taught drum corps at Southwind, the Madison Scouts, and Santa Clara Vanguard. Bo Sodders, High Brass Instructor - is the Associate Director of Bands at Ola High School in McDonough, GA. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Education degree cum laude from Bowling Green State University where he was avidly performed in wind, orchestral, and chamber ensembles. He has extensive teaching experience with the Maumee High School band and winter guard programs while also serving as a leadership and conducting clinician for the Fred J. Miller Summer Clinics. Prior to joining Spirit’s Brass Staff, Bo was a performing member of the Glassmen where he served as Drum Major and was the 2006 Jim Jones Leadership Award winner. Justin Robinson, Trumpet Instructor - is a Music Education and Trumpet major at Mississippi State University. An experienced staff member of numerous high school bands he also maintains a private trumpet studio. Prior to joining Spirit’s Brass Staff, Justin was a member of Memphis Sound and the 2008 World Champion Phantom Regiment. Josh Ray, High Brass Instructor - is currently in his third year as an Assistant Band Director at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, GA and holds a Bachelor of Music in Education with concentration in trumpet from The University of Oklahoma. During his time at Harrison the Wind Ensemble has performed at the Midwest Clinic (2007), Janfest (2009) and GMEA (2009). The marching band is a consistent BOA Regional Finalist and was a BOA Grand National Finalist in 2007. The band has been chosen to participate in the 2009 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. He also directs the Harrison Jazz program and teaches AP Music Theory. Josh’s drum corps experience as a performing member is with Southwind and the Madison Scouts. He also served as a member of Southwind’s Brass Staff prior to joining the Spirit’s staff. Justin Doss, High Brass Instructor - is currently the Associate Director of Bands at Park Hill High School in Kansas City, MO and additionally teaches band at Congress Middle School. He holds both his Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude and Master of Arts in Education degrees from Truman State University. In addition to teaching, Justin has regularly served as a clinician and drill designer for bands throughout the Midwest. Prior to joining Spirit’s Brass Staff, he was a member and soloist with the Madison Scouts and a member of the Madison Scouts Brass Staff. Ross Wilkerson, High Brass Instructor - currently works for Indiana University’s IT Department and is currently a trumpet instruct with IU’s Marching Hundred. As a college trumpet student Ross spent time teaching with numerous high school marching band programs across central Indiana. Prior to joining the brass staff at Spirit, Ross was a performing member of the Madison Scouts. Patrick Hinton, Low Brass Instructor - holds a Bachelors of Music Education from Jacksonville State University and is currently completing a Master of Tuba Performance degree at The University of Alabama where is a also a member of The University of Alabama Faculty Brass Quintet. In addition, he is a member of the renowned UA Wind Ensemble, UA Student Tuba Quartet, and is the former principal tubist with the Huxford Symphony Orchestra. Prior to joining Spirit’s Brass Staff, Patrick was a performing member of the Spirit Tuba section for three years. Kyle Wiechmann, Low Brass Instructor - recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Texas College of Music. While at UNT he studied under Dr. Nicholas Williams, Dr. Brian Bowman, and Dennis Fischer as was an active performer in the lab band program. Kyle has taught in a variety of capacities with UNT’s Green Brigade, Creekview High School, and the R.L. Turner High School band programs. Prior to joining Spirit’s Brass Staff he was a member of the Madison Scouts. In addition, we are pleased to continue to utilize the teaching talents of former Spirit Brass Caption Head and current Spirit Program Coordinator Mark D. Waymire. Mark’s extensive biography in performing, teaching, and scholarship will continue to lend itself to the horn lines growth and achievement. Visual Staff Jeremy Hunt – Drill Designer and Visual Supervisor - Originally from upstate New York, Jeremy brings a wealth of experience in the drum corps, marching band, and indoor activities. He began his performance career at the age of 14 with his local high school band followed by marching experience with the Patriots of Rochester, NY. Jeremy’s World Class marching experience came as a four year member of the Bluecoats drum and bugle corps. Following his age-out year Jeremy spent 1998-2000 teaching with Carolina Crown followed by the Glassmen and the Colts. From 2003-2006 Jeremy served as the Visual Caption Head for the Madison Scouts where he worked closely with Spirit’s current brass staff and program coordinator. From 2007-09 Jeremy was the drill designer for the Colts drum and bugle corps. In addition to his drum corps experience, Jeremy is an accomplished drill writer for marching bands across the United States and Canada. He has designed shows for BOA Regional and National finalist James Bowie HS (TX), Mariner HS (FL), Fred J. Page HS (TN), J.B. Connally HS (TX), Cordova HS (TN), and Oakville Senior HS (MO). He has also served as visual designer for the Calgary Stampede Showband who placed 2nd at the 2009 World Association of Marching Showbands in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. In the WGI Indoor percussion circuit Jeremy has taught and designed for the 2009 FFCC scholastic open champion East Lake high school, scholastic world finalist Fred J. Page high school, Independent world finalist Infinity and Momentum, the 2001 Independent open champion Eklipse and Mariner high school, the 2006 WGI PSA World Champion. Carlos Gonzalez – Caption Head - Carlos brings an impressive resume including the past three years on the visual staff of Santa Clara Vanguard. Prior to joining the Vanguard, Carlos spent two years on the visual staff of Carolina Crown and one year with the visual staff at the Bluecoats of Canton, Ohio. In the marching band world Carlos has been the caption head/designer/consultant to some of the finest bands in the nation including four years with 2004 Bands of America National Runner-up Kennesaw Mountain High School Band. He has also worked with the three time Bands of America National Champion Plymouth Canton Educational Park Marching Band of Plymouth, Michigan. Carlos has also spent three seasons with BOA Regional Finalist Kell High School. Currently, Carlos is the visual caption head with BOA Regional Finalist Walton HS in Marietta, GA where he works with the Walton Indoor Percussion Ensemble, the 2008 and 2009 SAPA Scholastic A & Open Champion and the award winning Walton Winterguard. Carlos is finishing his Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish at Georgia State University. G. Jon Thomann, Instructor – G. Jon returns for his second season on the Spirit visual staff. He received his music education degree from Eastern Michigan University, and is currently the interim Director of Bands at Novi High School in Novi, Michigan. Before he began his teaching career he taught for many different marching bands and winter drum lines in the state of Michigan. Jon marched euphonium with the Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps 2002-2003 and was on the instructional staff at Southwind from 2004-2006. Chris Williams, Consultant – After performing with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 1994, Chris taught on staff with SCV from 1995-1998. In 2008, he was the Visual Caption Head for the Vanguard Cadet corps wining the DCI Open Class Championship. He graduated from California State University with a degree in music and is now the director at Washington Union high school in Fresno, California. He is a consultant, and has taught many award winning bands across the nation, including the Fresno State University Band, as drill designer. Scott Maxie, Instructor - Scott is director of bands at Greenwood High School in Greenwood, SC. He has taught on the visual staff at Carolina Crown and was a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Marcher Award at Crown during his performing years of 2001, 2002, and 2004. He has worked with several bands in South Carolina, Florida, and Utah and works as a freelance drill writer. Brad Slusarczyk, Instructor - Brad is a 2009 age out of the DCI World Champion Blue Devils from Concord, CA. Prior to joining the Blue Devils he performed with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2008, and with Carolina Crown from 2003 – 2005. He currently is principal tubist for the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Wind Ensemble. He was a finalist in the 2006 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference Youth Artist Solo Tuba Division. In addition to his performance duties, Brad teaches visual at Surry Central High School in Dobson, NC, South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, SC, and consults at Leford High School in Thomasville, NC. He also teaches winterguard at Surry Central. Brad is currently completing his degree in music education and tuba performance at North Carolina-Greensboro. Tim Heichelheim, Instructor – Tim is currently the Visual Caption Manager and Drill Writer at Westview high school in Portland, Oregon. In addition, he has worked with several other high schools in the Portland area including Aloha, Centennial, and the NWAPA three time champions, Southridge high school. His drum corps marching experience includes three years with the Seattle Cascades (04-06) and three years with the Santa Clara Vanguard (07-09). He was one of the baritone soloist for the 2009 show with Vanguard. His professional involvement includes the Festival Brass and the Rip City Brass. He is currently studying Music Education at Portland State University. Brian Kinnett, Instructor - Brian is an alumni of Spirit performing from 2003-2007. His final three years Brian served two years as the assistant drum major, and then head drum major in 2007. He has teaching experience with many Grand National and regional finalist bands including: Kennesaw Mountain high school, Harrison high school, and Walton high school. He is currently completing his double major at Kennesaw State University with degrees in music and graphic design. Robert Green, Instructor – Robert performed with the Blue Devils from 2004 – 2007, winning the DCI World Championship in 2007. Currently he attends Kennesaw State University while in pursuit of rock stardom playing Bass Guitar in bands around the Atlanta area ranging from Death Metal to Chicago Blues. Robert also teaches for the Harrison high school band and the Walton high school band. He is also on the teaching staff of Odyssey Percussion Theatre. Will Messenger, Instructor - Will currently is pursuing a music degree at Northern Kentucky University with an emphasis in trumpet. His performed with Southwind drum and bugle corps from 2005 – 2006 and with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2007. He has also taught at Boone County and Mount Healthy high school bands. Kyle Goodson, Instructor - Kyle is currently attending Texas A&M University completing his degree in Geology with a minor in business. From 2008 – 2009 he performed with the Santa Clara Vanguard. In addition, Kyle is the marching instructor and show designer for the A&M Consolidated High School Marching Band from College Station, TX where he has been teaching for two years. Travis Cottle, Instructor – Travis gained drum corps experience performing with the Santa Clara Vanguard from 2007-2009. He is currently finishing his bachelor's degree in Music at Sam Houston University in Texas and has consulted and taught for many bands in the Texas area. Guard Staff Jude Boughton, Caption Head – Prior to joining Spirit Jude served as the Co-Caption Head and movement/dance instructor for the Phantom Regiment drum and bugle corps in 2003-2004 before joining the staff of the Colts as Program Coordinator for five seasons. He also served as a guest movement instructor with the Glassmen drum and bugle corps. He also served as the movement/dance technician and designer for The Black Watch Winter Guard from Mt. Laurel, NJ for the past eight seasons as well as movement instructor for Mechanicsburg his school and Juxtaposition Winter Guards. Other teaching credits include Pittston Area high school, Ben Davis high school, Highland high school, Clovis high school, Triton high school, and the Reading Buccaneer drum and bugle corps. Jude has also served as a movement judge and clinician focusing on movement for non-dancers since 1997 working in the past extensively for WGI, DCA, and the National Judges Association. He attended Kutztown University in Pennsylvania with a focus in Theatre and Dance and has taken in-depth studies in “Movement for Non-dancers”, Laban Movement Analysis, and “Dance in the Musical Theatre”. Scott Beck, Instructor – Scott returns to the staff of Spirit after an absence of several years. In the meantime, he served on the guard staff of Phantom Regiment and has spent time working with outstanding groups throughout the country including: Lassiter high school band, Pope high school band, John Overton high school band, and JSU Center Stage. He has been involved with the color guard activity for over twenty-five years including performing with Miller’s Blackhawk Winter Guard, the Suncoast Sound, and Crossmen drum and bugle corps. He resides in Bethlehem, PA where he teaches elementary school. Billy O’Brian, Instructor – Billy is from Riverside, NJ just outside of Philadelphia, PA. He has performed with the Jersey Surf drum and bugle corps, the University of Delaware, Black Watch Independent World Color Guard of Mount Laurel, NJ from 2004 – 2007. Most recently he performed with the DCA World Champion Reading Buccaneers in 2008. As a teacher he has taught groups in the Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia area including Triton Regional high school which was crowned the 2009 TIA Scholastic A Color Guard Champion. He has designed and choreographed for several groups throughout the Tri-State area and most recently Co-Designer for the USSBA Group 3 Open National Champion Rancocas Valley high school. Away from the guard acitivty Billy works in the mortgage industry. Ryan Klawitter, Instructor – Currently a student at Central Pennsylvania College completing a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting, Ryan has been a long performer and teacher in the color guard activity. He has recently taught for the Colts drum and bugle corps in 2008, Mechanicsburg high school band (2008-2009), Cedar Cliff high school (2009), South Western high school (2008-2009), Governor Thomas Johnson high school (2006), and the Northern York Senior high school (2002-2009). As a performer he has performed with the Boston Crusaders (2005), the Black Watch Independent World Guard (2007, 2009), Penn State Eclipse (2005), and the Reading Buccaneers drum and bugle corps (2004-2005, 2007). Ryan resides in Mechanicsburg, PA. Nanette DeRemer, Instructor – Nanette has extensive guard performance and teaching experience including with the five time World Champion Reading Buccaneers in 2002-2003, 2005-2006, and 2009. She performed with the Crossmen drum and bugle corps in 2001-2002 before aging out with the Phantom Regiment in 2004. In addition, she was a five year member of the Black Watch Independent World Color Guard from Mount Laurel, NJ. She has taught many high school color guard and dance programs including the 2009 TIA Scholastic Open Color Guard Champion and 2009 TIA Scholastic World Dance Team Champion, Northem York high school from Dillsburg, PA. She also teaches Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap, and Pointe at DeJul School of Dance in Franklintown, PA. In 2007 and 2008 Nanette served as the movement technician for the Colts drum and bugle corps. Brian Ward, Instructor – Brian has a wealth of teaching, performing and adjudicating experience in the color guard activity. He performed with Carolina Crown, the Reading Buccaneers, Alter Ego Color Guard, The Patriots, and the Black Watch Color Guard. In 2005 he served on the instructional staff of Division III Champions, The Raiders drum and bugle corps and in 2006 with the Colts. He has taught programs including Sitao Winter Guard, Mechanicsburg Winter Guard, and Lampeter-Strasburg Winter Guard. Currently, he attends Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Percussion Staff Shane Gwaltney, Percussion Coordinator and Battery Arranger – Shane returns for his third season as Percussion Coordinator and Battery Arranger. In addition, he serves as the Visual Designer and Battery Arranger for Music City Mystique. He began as a charter member of Mystique in 1995. He performed with the ensemble until 1999 and was a member of Street Beats from 1997-2003 which performed at the PASIC convention and Modern Drummer Music Festival. Shane has also taught Southwind drum and bugle corps, Jacksonville State University PASIC drum line, Middle Tennessee State University PASIC drum line, Tyler Junior College, Choctawhatchee high school, Ooltewah high school, and Northmont high school to name a few. He is an artist and clinician for Innovative Percussion and Zildjian Cymbals. In 2009, Shane joined an elite group of signature artist when Innovative Percussion introduced the Shane Gwaltney signature marching snare drum stick. He resides in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida where he is the Percussion Program Director at Choctawhatchee high school. Caleb Rothe, Front Ensemble Arranger – Caleb Rothe served as a percussion director and front ensemble arranger at Ayala HS from 1997 to 2009, Rancho Cucamonga HS from 2000 to 2004, and the Pulse Percussion Ensemble from 2004 to 2007.; He has been a percussion educator in Southern California since 1997 and has worked with more than 20 different high schools, independent percussion ensembles, and drum and bugle corps. He is a nationally sought-after adjudicator and arranger, and has written for numerous groups across the United States and Japan. Caleb served as principle percussionist of the Cal Poly Pomona University Wind Ensemble from 1998 to 2003, and has also performed with the Irvine Valley College Wind Symphony. In addition to his concert performances, Caleb has been active as a studio musician and has performed on several CDs and film soundtracks. Caleb endorses Pro-Mark sticks and mallets, Sabian cymbals, Remo drumheads, and Yamaha musical instruments and accessories. He was a founding member and now serves as President of the Southern California Percussion Alliance. Caleb is also a member of the Winter Guard International Percussion Advisory Board, Percussion Steering Committee, and is the Vice President of Percussion for the WGI Board of Directors. In indoor competition, his ensembles have collectively won 9 WGI World Championship medals, been WGI World Championship Finalists 25 times, been Regional Finalists 55 times, and Regional Champions 20 times. On the field, his groups have previously been named DCI Division III World Champions, Bands of America Grand National Finalists, Bands of America Regional Champions, and Western Band Association Finalists 23 times. Locally, his ensembles have won 20 SCPA Championship medals and over 60 first place awards. Caleb received his Bachelors degree in Computer Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in the spring of 2003 and his Teaching Credential from the University of Redlands in the winter of 2007. Caleb lives with his wife Kelly and son Cameron in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Joe Hobbs, Co-Caption Head (Battery) – Joe returns for his third season as Co-Caption Head and Snare Instructor. He has an wealth of experience in the drum corps activity including as a member of The Cavaliers where he was part of two DCI World Championships, and the 2006 DCI I & E mixed ensemble championship. He was named “Cavalier of the Year” and the “Zildjian Award Winner” in 2006. He was the section leader from 2005-2006. Prior to his experience with The Cavaliers, Joe performed with Southwind drum and bugle corps from 2001-2003 where he was named the 2003 DCI I & E Snare Drum Champion. In addition, Joe is the Director of Percussion at Harpeth high school in Nashville, TN and on staff at Music City Mystique. He has also taught at Murray State University, Mt. Juliet high school, Marshall County high school, and Murray high school. Sean Womack, Co-Caption Head (Front Ensemble) – Sean is the co-founder of DoubleStop Percussion, a Birmingham, AL based percussion education company providing percussion instruction for schools throughout the Southeast. He received his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from the University of Georgia. Mr. Womack is a former member of Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps from Orlando Florida and also has performed with the Macon Symphony Orchestra and the Savannah Symphony Orchestra. In addition, to his duties with Spirit he serves as the front ensemble arranger at Odyssey Percussion Theatre from Atlanta Georgia. Sean also maintains a studio of percussion students from elementary through high school. He is in demand as an adjudicator, clinician, and arranger throughout the United States. His teachers include Dr. Eric Hollenbeck, Dr. Thomas McCutchen, and Dr. Arvin Scott. Mr. Womack is a member of Percussive Arts Society, MENC, and the Alabama Music Educators Association and is an endorser for Innovative Percussion, Pearl Drums, Adams Musical Instruments, and Evans Drumheads. He is married to Sara, an elementary school music teacher, and is a father to two boys, Will and Mason. Matt Jordan, Front Ensemble Instructor - Matt Jordan currently lives in the Denton, TX area, where he is a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of North Texas. Before starting at UNT, Matt earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance (Cum Laude) from Middle Tennessee State University. In addition, he has previously worked with Music City Mystique of Nashville, TN. Matt is also an active arranger, writing for schools throughout the United States, such as Father Ryan High School, McGavock High School, Grissom High School, Franklin High School, Mt. Juliet High School, and Middle Tennessee State University. Matt currently performs with the world-renowned University of North Texas Wind Symphony, as well as the 2:00 Lab Band, UNT Percussion Ensemble, and other ensembles. Matt is also an active solo performer, having been a soloist with the UNT Percussion Ensemble, MTSU Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, and the Eastern Music Festival percussion ensemble. Matt was the timpanist of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2003 and 2004, and Music City Mystique from 2000-2005. In 2004, he received 1st place in both the PASIC and DCI Timpani Individuals competitions. Matt’s major influences include - Lalo Davila, Erik Johnson, Christopher Deane, Mark Ford, Leigh Howard Stevens, Christopher Norton, John Feddersen, She-e Wu, Scot Corey, and Bill Wiggins. Jeremy Chapman, Front Ensemble Instructor - Jeremy is band director at Norwood middle school and Clinton high school in East Tennessee. He also works as a freelance arranger and marching percussion specialist. He is the current Front Ensemble Caption Head for Odyssey Percussion Theatre in Atlanta, GA. Jeremy’s drum corps experience includes stays at Southwind and the Colts drum and bugle corps. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Music Education where he studied with Professor James B. Campbell and performed with many university ensembles. He has performed with The Cavaliers of Rosemont, IL, the Lexington Philharmonic, and was winner of the 2001 Percussive Arts Society International Convention Solo Competition for Percussion and Alto Saxophone Duo. He was a featured artist with the UK Percussion Ensemble at the 2001 PASIC convention. He is a founding member of Blue Steel professional steel drum band. Jami Fennell, Battery Instructor – Jami returns for another season with Spirit, the corps he marched with from 1999-2001. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Jacksonville State University where he performed with the Marching Southerners and the JSU PASIC drumline. He also attended Western Carolina University. In addition to teaching Spirit Jami has also taught the percussion at Jacksonville State University, Kennesaw Mountain high school, Lassiter high school, and is an instructor for DoubleStop Percussion in Birmingham, AL. Mark Hunter, Quad Instructor - Mark returns to Spirit as Quad instructor for the 2010 season. Prior to joining the Spirit staff in 2009 he taught for the Colts drum and bugle corps as well as the Harrison high school band of Kennesaw, GA. As a performer Mark was the marimba soloist for the 2004 Japan tour of BLAST! and performed with the two time high percussion award winning and World Champion Cavaliers of Rosemont, IL. In addition, he has performed with the University of Kentucky and Falcons Drumline. Jim Powell, Cymbal Instructor – Jim is a contributor to the Eddie Capps series of Cymbal Technique books and is an active clinician in cymbal technique when not busy with his web design and software development business. He is a Spirit alumni and performer with Odyssey Percussion Theatre in 2008. He is currently cymbal instructor at Choctawhatchee high school in Ft. Walton Beach, FL.
