Spirit is pleased to offer video auditions for any perspective brass ensemble member who could not attend the November or December audition weekends at Jacksonville State University. Your video audition will provide the staff an opportunity to evaluate your abilities and to determine if you should be invited to attend the next rehearsal weekend on January 4-6.

Your video audition should include the following materials (8 minutes total time limit).
- State your name, birth date, current age, mailing address, phone number, email address, section you wish to audition for, and any previous drum corps/marching band experience. You must also download and complete the member application and medical forms. The forms should be sent with your video application. You will be required to pay the audition fee of $75 and $100 camp fee if you are invited to attend a rehearsal weekend.
- Your video taped audition should include a technical etude of your choice (1-2 minutes maximum). The exercise should demonstrate your finger and tongue capabilities on the instrument. Please remember to "mark time" during your performance. Since you will be auditioning for the drum corps, being able to play music and move your feet in time is crucial. Be sure that we are able to see you hold your instrument parrallel to the ground and that your entire body is made viewable in your video.
- Perform a portion of a lyrical etude of your choice (1-2 minutes maximum). Much like the technical etude, the lyrical etude should be performed while "marking time". The same requirements for the video performance will apply.
- Perform a chromatic scale (slurred) from your lowest notes to your highest notes and retun to your starting pitch. This is to demonstrate the range on your instrument. Breathe as often as you need, make sure you produce the best possible sound across each register. Be sure to mark time during your performance. Perform the scale in either eighth note triplets or in sixteenths notes. Tempo marking of your choice.
- Perform the following lip flexibility exercise on your instrument. Play this exercise through the valve sequence ending on 1-2 combination and return back to the top. Perform the exercise at M.M. = 120. Be sure to mark time.
Brass Exercise #1
- Perform the following articulation exercise to demonstrate your articulation capability. Play the exercise down the valve sequence to 1-2 combination and end on the final arrival note. Be sure to mark time during your performance. Use a metronome marking of quarter note equal 144.

Once we have received and viewed your tape, we will inform you of your status. It will be either a)you are invited to the next full rehearsal weekend on January 4-6 to continue and complete your audition(we think you have the talent and ability to make the corps musically, but need to see you work within the ensemble and with the visual ensemble before making a final decision) or b) unfortunatlely, we cannot offer you a spot at this time based on your audition.
No outright and definite decisions on your status will be made based upon your video audition.
Video auditions may be accepted after February 3rd, but no guarantees of awarding a performance position will be made until you attend at leat one rehearsal weekend at JSU. You must also fulfill your financial obligations to the corps in order to be considered for membership.
All videos/dvds become the propertiy of the corps and will not be returned.
