Jack Borland

Cymbal Instructor / Movement Specialist

Jack Borland began his career with marching cymbals in the fall of 2004 at the University of Iowa.  He subsequently auditioned for and gained a position at the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, IA where he marched from 2005-2007, serving as section leader his last two seasons and winning an I&E title in 2005.  Upon aging out, he went on to instruct the cymbal line at the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps from San Antonio, TX from 2008-2010, where he also served as a visual instructor for the battery percussion.

Jack also participated in WGI, performing with Music City Mystique from Nashville, TN in 2006 where he earned a gold medal in PIW class.  The following season, he performed with Gateway Indoor from St. Louis, MO.  In 2010, Jack joined the staff of Music City Mystique as a cymbal technician, a position he continues to hold.  For the 2011 season, his role expanded to include instructing and choreographing the bodywork for the marching ensemble.

In addition to marching and teaching, Jack also founded what is known as "kymbos", a movement geared towards preserving the marching cymbal community and providing a forum for all who are involved in the activity to converse and share ideas.

Jack was instructed by Lauren (Paul) Sakowski, Jake Ansley, Ben Gervais, Joel McCauley, and Eddie Capps.  He has consulted with groups such as RhythmX (PIW), the University of Iowa, Missouri State University, Twin Cities Area Independent (PIA), Centerville HS (Centerville, OH), Brookwood HS (Atlanta, GA), and Gateway HS (Pittsburgh, PA).  Jack is very excited to be joining the staff at Spirit of Atlanta for the 2012 season!
