SPIRIT OF ATLANTA

Countless fans commented last year on their delight that Spirit of Atlanta returned to the roots of its Southern legacy. There's something comforting about seeing the baby blue uniforms with the trademark delta emblem, and hearing the corps play music of the South. Music of and about the Civil War provides Spirit of Atlanta with a distinctly Southern vehicle, with the first, third and fifth piece coming from the recent movie soundtrack to "Glory."

"Call to Arms" sets the mood with the plaintive cry of a lone bugler, calling the corps together from across the field. Once together, the corps launches into Morton Gould's spirited "Variations on 'Dixie,'" reminding us of the gloriously loud Spirit horn lines of the late 1970s. "Antietam" is a haunting piece exploring the tragic aftermath of the bloodiest batle ever fought on American soil. The big, green flag emblazoned with a harp is a duplicate of the Irish-American battalion flag that was the last to remain standing after the conflict.

Morton Gould's "American Salute" is an ecstatic piece about the elation of welcoming soldiers home from battle, based on "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." "Finale" from "Glory" ponders the sorrow and agony of war, with faith in the future. You can almost hear Abraham Lincoln state, "from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion - that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain."
